The Studios Building
The Student Loans Company
Project Management, Contract Administration
In 2020, PMP successfully completed the refurbishment of The Memphis Building for The Student Loans Company (SLC). The project was completed on time and budget despite the challenges presented by the global Covid-19 pandemic. SLC and PMP had fostered a successful working partnership, which resulted in SLC appointing PMP to Project Manage the refurbishment of The Studios Building.
As SLC prepared for its staff to return to the office after a period of working remotely, the key criteria in facilitating this would be a safe working environment that allowed social distancing. As such, additional space was required and The Studio’s Building was identified for refurbishment to accommodate the teams return.
The Client’s Brief for the refurbishment was to create improved welfare facilities in The Studio which would mirror those installed as part of the refurbishment of The Memphis Building. The ambition was to create a space that felt like a continuity of the Main Building rather than a ‘bolt-on’ that could feel like a temporary after thought. Creating a space that would promote staff well being as they return to working in the SLC office was a key driver in the design. The solution would create storage walls, break out meeting spaces, collaborative working spaces, new kitchen facilities and tiered Bleachers Seating in the refurbished reception area.

The Client, SLC, required the project to be delivered fast track to align with the launch of their return to office plan scheduled for 16 August 2021. The Studios Building is partially occupied and the works were required to be completed with minimal disruption to the existing users.
The Architect was appointed by SLC and designs were under way in advance of SLC appointing PMP.
Upon PMP’s appointment, a Description of Work Pricing document was prepared to allow SLC’s in house procurement team to create a tender package and upload to a Public Tendering Portal that would enable contractors to bid for the project.
PMP assisted SLC in assessing the tender returns to ensure that a suitable contractor was identified and the tender represented value for money and the chosen contractor could demonstrate an ability to meet the unyielding timescales. During the process a Value Engineering exercise was carried out to increase opportunity and reduce spend and align the Contract Sum with the Client’s approved budget.
PMP then prepared the Contract Documents and negotiated the terms on behalf of SLC before overseeing the execution of the documents.
The Studios project is currently on site, following the planned programme and scheduled to complete on 13 August 2021.
